Issues we work on
At Puan Amal Hayati we do not shy away from tackling the tough issues. See some of the issues we work on.
FGM/C
Female Genital Mutilation and Cutting (FGM/C) includes all forms of partial or total removal of female external genitalia without medical reasons. One in two Indonesian women undergo some form of it. It is primarily done for cultural reasons, perceived demand from religion, and alleged health benefits. There are no medical benefits or significant risks. The practice has been spreading in recent years and is increasingly offered and promoted in hospitals. We work with religious leaders, government, and healthcare to eradicate FGM/C.
Violence against women
One in three Indonesian women experienced sexual violence, and one in five experienced physical violence in the past five years (WHO, 2022.) The number of cases of violence continues to rise - often enabled by sexist social norms and a lack of support from communities and the state. We strive to protect women's rights by using a faith-based approach
Religious and Racial Intolerance
In the last decade, Indonesia has experienced instances of religious and racial intolerance, including attacks on religious and ethnic minority communities and places of worship. At Puan Amal Hayati, we work on challenging such intolerance, and promoting respect and solidarity amongst diverse religious and racial identities.
Religious Extremism
Indonesia had seen the emergence of radical Islamist groups advocating for a more exclusive and extreme interpretation of Islam. We work to produce inclusive religious interpretations, narratives and spaces, to combat the extremism.
